I’m pissed. Is this what Apple call customer service? Again, it’s Thursday and 3 more days of the week went by without a sign from the Apple Store CentrO.
Am I impatient? Hell, yeah! I am! I mean, I’ve taken my not cheap 2.200€ iMac to the Apple Store CentrO a few WEEKS ago, you know the story, I don’t want to repeat myself. Getting a new one is fine, but it takes ages! Really ages! Last Saturday I’ve got the call that it will take a few more days – and that they have NO IDEA when this BTO iMac will be ready. I mean, sure, they told me it will take 2-3 weeks. 2 weeks ended yesterday if you count it from the day when they finally ordered it for me (the replacement one). Sure – 1 more week to go – right? But how long could it take to build an iMac in Ireland and ship it to Germany!? Every other computer builder like DELL, HP, IBM, Lenovo would possibly laugh about that.
Honestly, I was really thinking of getting a 2nd 27″ i3 tomorrow to use as 2nd screen (same height) and emergency system. Would look nice like this:
I’d already placed a reservation for tomorrows Black Friday which is also a rebated day in Germany at the Apple Stores. But to be honest, I woke up this morning and I’m really about to rethink this idea. Why? Because it’s damn much money, because Apple’s customer care really SUCKS.
Imagine you bought a computer to do your work – you buy a performant one because your mobile computer is not able to do the work fast enough (yeah thanks to dumb and bad implemented Flash on Mac OS X!), so you buy a big computer and invest a lot of money. Then it behaves strange, you take it to your Apple Store and they are not able to fix it – 1 1/2 weeks messed. Then they are so nice and tell you that you will get a new one – and you’re waiting 2 more weeks so far! So the iMac is meanwhile nearly 4 weeks away. You are pushed back to a great mobile device which is just not able to process your heavy load tasks for you. This sucks, Apple!
What have they offered to me when I asked how to do my work? “You can buy a new iMac right now and return it when you get your new BTO one.”. Hold on a second. Do you understand what that means? I would have to INVEST 2.000€+ for an iMac! Getting the money back also takes 3 weeks (via giro). That’s a very unsatisfying idea. Still now sure why they didn’t gave me a Core i7 2.93GHz from their stock and let me wait. Because of the 130MHz? LOL! Sorry… but I think shipping costs more than this price difference! The result: Me, as angry customer, rethinking the whole Apple idea.
Would I go and use Linux all day long for my work? No – no Photoshop there.
Would I go and use Windows all day long for my work? Maybe – no thrilled by this idea but as longer as this process takes, I’m thinking more and more of it!
You may now say: They told you 2-3 weeks, so if they deliver it on Wednesday, Dec 1st, it will be in time – you’re right. But in the same sentence they told me that it will NOT take so long. Seriously? What is “not that long?” 2 weeks + 6 days?…
Ok – you got it – I’m angry.
What’s your idea about that? Please – let me know!
UPDATE
Hey guys,
as promised, here’s a little update.
I went to the store last night to talk to a responsible person in the Apple Store personally. Of course, the Store Manager I talked to on the phone before was not there anymore. So I talked to a sales guy I know from previous shoppings. In my mind the nicest guy there – so we discussed – around and hour. The iMac “building process” is already gone too far. Hmm interesting – on the other side I just talked to the store and got the information that all “traffic lights” are now “green” and they start with the BTO now.
But to come back to last night’s visit. Because the complete process is already in their system, they couldn’t stop it nor delete it and give me a Mac Pro instead of the iMac (smallest version). But they told me that I can now buy a Mac Pro and if they can’t stop or delete the order for the BTO iMac, I could bringt it back, get my money back and take the replaced iMac with me. But for an unknown reason, I said no to the Mac Pro. I had 2x Mac Pros and I was not really happy with them. Also – I have no good displays anymore to attach, this would create some additional costs. Another argument is to buy RAM and that the Quad Core Xeon Mac Pro is slower than the current iMac. So I said: Thank you for the advise and went home.
This morning, I stand up at 6am and drove to the CentrO store again to run my planned route with the Dual iMac 27″. 101€ price off for the iMac 27″ Core i3 3.2GHz – nice! So I got one and honestly, it’s here, in it’s box. I couldn’t find any time yet to unbox it – also – I want to take a short movie for my podcast.
So why did I changed my mind so rapidly and gave more money to those unfriendly people in the store? Well, Black Friday rebate and a some issues with my MacBook that turns pretty hot when running Flash – and starting Monday for the next week – I need to run a Flash environment 12h+ a day for a customer project. Yikes! So that’s the reason. It was there, was reduced and is a fine computer.
Here’s a photo of the box and how it looks still right now while typing this:

The small blue box is a new G-Drive 320GB FW800/USB2 2.5″ HD for photos when I’m out of office and need to store a large amount of RAW files. This is the second one – the first sounded “broken”. This one works great. It’s a bit loud. A 7200upm Enterprise Class Hitachi HD is built in, so that’s ok
Will use it mostly to put data on it, and then put it back into the nice leather-box that came with it. On the road, it’s nice to have USB2 (my MacBook has no FireWire :/), bur here at home, I can load the data with FW800 speed down to my RAID boxes.
In the end – I still don’t know WHEN I will receive my new iMac 27″ i7. And noone seems to care about it. That’s sad and disappointing and MAYBE a reason to say bye to the Macs, but honestly – I still like OS X and my known environment for work too much to leave for something evil & ugly like Windows…
And yeah – Hackintosh is great idea when I really start to render more stuff any day
A 12 Core Xeon workstation made out of PC components running Compressor sounds VERY good – but that’s really a plan for the future and time when I’m not that busy like now.
More updates to come soon, hopefully!
UPDATE 2
Morning, here’s the unboxing video I’ve taken yesterday
Enjoy it!
UPDATE 3
So, guys, it’s Sunday. On Friday I should got a call from the Store Manager to give me some “grab-able” details when the new iMac will arrive. No call back. Of course, so I called (again) – and yeah – good luck it’s a local number and I don’t need to pay for that – and surprise: the Manager was not on the store. The woman taking the call told me he will call me back on Saturday. Ok – I was on the road, so I had redirected my phone calls to my mobile – but – surprise! No call on Saturday, too.
So I really think I need to be a bit MORE aggressive with them. 1 month+ now – that’s no service. So I will call them on Monday and tell them that, if I can’t pick this new iMac up by Wednesday, I want my money back. Also – I will return both just bought iMacs (my wifes iMac 21.5″ i3 and the above in the video unboxed iMac 27″ i3). That’s ok and my wife is on my side here. I mean, I’ve spend 2.800€ on 2 new iMacs and am still treated like shit?
Yeah – you can’t buy service there – for sure – and that’s not reason why I’d spend money there.
You may say: this will NOT take you further. You’re absolutely right, but I then give them a sign: Not every customer could be treated like that. What’s the solution? No idea so far – I’ve an old PC here and like kayoone is his a bit pissed comment down below has mentioned: it’s not a problem to put this box under my desk, connect a screen and use this for the mentioned flash environment. Not fine – not the way I wanted it – but in the end: will work.
I’m excited for the next week – so keep an eye on this if you’re interested in the story
UPDATE 4
It’s a few days later and I just saw that Apple has booked 670€ from my VISA. Hmm… 670€!? Wait a moment – that SSD should max. cost 540€.
So I spend another hour on the phone, calling with the AppleCare in Cork and (again) with the Store Manager in the CentrO. It turns out, that they haven’t listened to me. I said that I wanted to have the SSD ONLY, I’ve a lot storage in the basement, so I don’t really need another 1TB HD, but fine. We found a way to solve this: I will get a 130€ voucher/coupon when I pick it up and I can keep the 1TB HD as “present”. *lol* Sorry, but… nothing fits better here.
I also got a call from the nice lady from AppleCare telling me that the iMac is alreay in transfer to Oberhausen and send me an eMail with the tracking code. That’s true!
So the iMac will arrive on Thursday and I will pick it up with this configuration:
- Apple iMac 27″
- Core i7 2.93GHz
- 4GB RAM (will be (hopefully) upgraded for free to 8GB by the Store)
- 256GB Apple SSD
- 1TB HD
- ATI HD5750
…
I’ve already ordered 16GB RAM for this machine and will put the 4x2GB into my wife’s iMac 21.5″ i3 and the “screen” iMac, so we will have 8GB in the i3′s and 16GB in the i7. That should be more than enough even for heavy video editing.
On Sunday, I experiences a lot of bad headache and neckpain. I was working the first day with my iMac 27″ i3. I thought: “Oh damnit – 27″ is too much for me.”. I maybe should point out, that I have put the iMac on the left corner of the desk, to be able to use it with the MacBook the same time. Why? Because I was in need to move the stuff over and install things parallel to my work (yeah – I had to work on that particular Sunday
).
I was already about to think about alternatives. The Mac Pro idea came up the second time, but I told my wife to try it again the next day.
On Monday morning, pretty early for me (7:00am), I moved the iMac into the middle of my desk and see – no issues. No headache nor neck pain! Great!
I’m just not sure if it’s a wise idea to use 2x 27″ displays the same time, but hey – it’s here, I CAN give it back it I want to, so I’ll try
The next weekend, I will use the setup I mentioned above:
27″ i3 (connected via Mini DisplayPort to Mini DisplayPort to:) 27″ i7
Let’s see how this works.
Of course, I said that I was treated like sh*t (and that’s true and in your comments, you guys agree with me). So I said to the nice woman from AppleCare, that I want a goodie for all this mess. She agreed and asked me to call once I have the iMac and everything is fine. I will do, I mentioned that I want an iPod Nano – not for me – but my wife finds it so cute
. She’s pretty sure that this will be no problem. Back in Dec/Jan 2009/2010 when I had bought the Mac Pro, the first one was broken (DOA – Dead on arrival), so I returned it and got a new one and also got an “AirPort Express” as a goodie which works until today pretty good! Just as a hint for you. I hate to beg, but in this case – you can really get something from them for free. Of course they will try to give you 50€ on your giro/VISA first, but stay hard and say what you want!
That’s it for today – I will keep you updated again (but I think with a new post called “iMac 27″ i7 finally arrived and it rocks!” or so
UPDATE 5
Is a peaceful one. Take a look at this:

Excited if it arrives today (it will) or better said: If I could pick it up later today
I call it “Super” because, well – it’s maxed out once it’s here!

Ivor
Hey Dennis,
I’ve been following your issues with Apple for some time now. What ever you do, please do not give them more money! At least not to Apple Store CentrO. Apple care sucks, that’s universal truth. But it even more sucks in EU. Buying additional i3 would give morons at Apple Store CentrO just another paycheck.
I know you’re angry, who wouldn’t be? Just take it easy and eveything will start to fit.
Apple Store doesn’t have anything to do with Apple Inc. nor Mac OS. Just don’t think that whole Apple sucks, and God forbid think of migration to other OS because of some incompetent pricks that don’t know how to keep or have satisfied customer. Apple isn’t perfect, we all know this, but it is the most close to perfect state! : )
I also believe that you should report this story to some real Apple employee. This would NOT happen in any of Apple US stores. You would be given NEW iMac immediately.
Two months ago I bought Macbook Pro in San Francisco Apple store (not the biggest store, the one in Embarcadero, which means that they couldn’t be fully equipped with replacements) . When I got home I discovered that when viewing screen at direct light, there was a nasty scratch under LCD glass! I packed the whole thing, and went back to Apple Store. After 15 min’s, the guys at store (who were extremely polite and helpful, even when they didn’t see the scratch at first look) realized that there really is a damage and REPLACED with the new one. 15 mins!
So yeah, report this to some relevant person at Apple. You should be given replacement immediately. i7 production is mass, there’s no way you should be waiting full month for this.
And when you get your beloved iMac i7, don’t allow yourself to have a bad feeling about the machine, that it wont work or that it’s the same machine. Apple makes these, not Apple Store employees! : )
Good luck and I’m looking forward reading your new post: iMac finally here!

You should have an look at some alternate Resellers in Essen.
It took some time to find an great Service for me and found an reseller in Munic. When ever it was neccessary i got a demonstration model as long as it needs to repair my own one.
Maybe, i could save a few Euros at apple Store or other Reseller. But it could never clear up the loss of one working day or more.
What you need is an confidential dealer with benefits and not the cheapest one.
dennis
Hi guys,
well here’s a little update on all this.
I called the Apple Store as mentioned before and guess what: NOTHING HAD HAPPENED! Something went wrong with the order and so I wasted 2 more weeks for NOTHING!
I then called the Apple Care Hotline which is in my mind in Ireland. I had a nice talk to a responsible person who now tries to get the mess out of the system. I asked her to give me a Mac Pro 2010 “Quad” instead of the iMac i7. I know the iMac is faster (a bit), but I want to reduce the risk of having issues with such a device again – broken HD, graphics card, optical drive? You need to bring it to Apple with the iMac – with the Mac Pro – you can quickly fix it on your own. So.. maybe the better idea. Uh! And yes, adding a SSD is pretty easy.
Now I’m waiting until the Apple Care woman and the Apple Store CentrO Store Manager have found a solution for me. Bloody hell – what a process. I just wish I had never sold my Mac Pro 2009 edition back in July because of the iMac
This would have saved me A LOT of money (and nerves).
More on this – when I know more
@Matzewe01: I would do, but in this case I have to go the way Apple itself wants me to walk along :/ Next time, believe me – I would go back to Trytec! Bochum!
pali7x
no offense, apple made a very beautiful masterpiece in hardware form, but if you can live without the appleness (speaking about the logo) how about build a hackintosh? i mean seriously, you’ve done this before, and you can do it all over again. there’s nothing to lose.
dennis
Hey Pali,
I don’t do this shit for fun – I make my money with these machines. I remember building Hackintosh systems in the past and even as a private thing, it was sometimes something that colored my hair grey. So as I respect Hackintosh in a private environment, I don’t think it’s a good choice for business. A kernel panic could kill my customer relationship. Neee…
Ivor
Progress at last! : ) Good choice of calling directly Ireland. But still, you should definitely make a problem to those irresponsible people at Centr0. That’s really not fair nor professional not to do anything. No one should be treated like that, especially you… who made quite a good “commercial” and promotion to Apple! In fact, you should be given a brand new iMac for free.
As to Hackintosh, I never read your posts about it. How was the experience? My budget never allowed me to buy a proper Mac Pro, so I build one. Yep, hackinotsh… but you must know that I’m doing this for two years now, so I pretty much learned how not to have kernel panics. Actually, I’ve had 2 or 3 KP’s and it was my error every time (Since Snow Leopard got out, that’s how old is my current Mac OS installation) Believe me, it’s literally identical to real Mac workflow and speed. Although, I do own older Mac’s like G3 Ruby and G4, but still, tax in my country is 40% on imports, so Mac Pro for my needs would be 5.000+ euros. I bet you felt like Steve Wozniak when your hackintosh started to boot! I know I did.
Don’t get me wrong, I would switch immediately to REAL Mac Pro if I had the cash : )
Please let us know the next episode of this iMac saga! : )
Volker
Hi Dennis,
I can clearly understand your frustration. I had a prob with my 27″ i7 last year… the hd showed SMART status red. The first two repair shops told me it takes at least 1 week, I can expect 2 weeks. They were like your store. Then I found a third one. “You need it for business” they asked… and of course I do need it for that and told them. They sad they will cheat a bit, I should expect to collect it within 48 hours. After 20 hours I got a call, it is done. I also went there when my display back light acted up, same speed of repair. What I want to say is, that not all support maybe that bad and also that it is worth maybe to look for another authorized repair center….
nice evening,
volker
dennis
You’re right and believe me – I would never again bring something to repair to this store. Not even that it’s slow and uncoordinated, but also it’s a mess to lift this heavy package through the complete mall.
Ivor
Hi Dennis,
LOL, you had faulty G-Drive?! Crazy luck, or bad karma at Centr0 store!
Great video, and good choice for new iMac! Actually, it was a bargain, since just LED 27inch costs about 1k EUR. At first I thought, whoa too much money given here, but really, this way you get an extra LED that can compute : )
As for hackintosh, let us know when you start making plans… Oh yes, can you make a few x64 GeekBench tests on your new iMac i3? LOL, almost wrote iMac G3… funny!
Good luck!

While more and more Apple is not able to tell me WHEN the iMac will arrive, I thought about setting them an ultimatum: If the iMac does not arrive on Wednesday, 1st of Dec., I want my money for this PARTICULAR machine back and I will also RETURN both bought iMac i3′s (my wifes 21.5″ AND this 27″) back to the store and also want my money back for them. Showing my protest.
In this case, this Hackintosh idea could become true earlier than just thougt on Friday. Got NOT the call back from the Store Manager on Friday (as promised) not on Saturday (also promised by another Store worked on Friday)).
I’m really more than rid of this kind of treatment. Believe me… Maybe doing the Hackintosh thing or simply switching back to Windows with a pre-build machine would give me less headache
Ivor
Hi Dennis,
Protest idea is good. Although, given the circumstances… do you think it would be better for your heath and nerves to take money back just for i7? Using the new i3 you currently have just for next week will probably do. It’s not as fast as i7 but is infinitely more than your Macbook. This way you will have a few days off in this whole story, to think about it. And to catch up your work : )
Then, at the end of this forthcoming week do whatever you feel it’s right! And if you choose to return both iMac i3, you will be able to it as well.
Also, you probably know this but building a hackintosh is another process which can sometimes be nerve wracking, and it isn’t smart thing to do after whole iMac fiasco. Does this makes sense to you? : ) Of course, when you think it’s time to build one, let me know!
kayoone
Dont really know if i like this idea.
Mac Pro bought and sold later, money wasted. Dell Server bought and sold, money wasted. Cinema Display bought and now probably sold, money wasted. Thats only the stuff from the last couple of months that i can remember.
Basically you should just have kept your Mac Pro with the 30″ Cinema Display, i mean what could be better than that? Now you throw even more money at those people that threated you like some idiot.
What you basically say is, you bought this new iMac because OSXs Flash performance is so bad that you cant work on a client project. Thats ridiculous man! Which Flash app could possible bring a Dual Core Macbook to its knees? I would have just slapped Windows on there via Bootcamp for the time being, because i am sure that would handle it just fine, or use some older Windows BOX via Remote Desktop to handle that project.
The argument that the iMac ist just 500eur (still alot of money btw) more expensive that the Cinema Display is also only half true. The fact is true yeah, but the Cinema Display also is a ridiculously overpriced piece of mediocreness.
In the end its your money and decision, but i really would just have stayed with the Mac Pro for the next couple of years. Maybe i am just filled with envy that i work my ass of and cant afford stuff like that.
dennis
Well, kayoone, I’m very sorry to make you jealous, even if I don’t see a good reason to be jealous about someone who is treated like shit by a company he gave thousands of hard-worked Euros to. Yeah – you hear right – and that is a sentence you wrote I’m really pissed off; also I do work my ass off 12-16h/day for my own company having to pay for live, our own house and also needed to spend money into working IT equipment which – apparently – does not work as it should. So please forgive me to share my experiences with my readers here on my blog. If you think I waste to much money – why do you care? It’s not yours! I’m not a “freakin’” banker who plays with your hard earned money.
Regarding your idea of running Flash in a VM – you’re right. This works. But do you have an idea how slow Windows 7 runs in a VM of an older MacBook? You can’t work with that – seriously. You’re wondering which site makes this heat? Here you go: http://www.6connex.com
Running bootcamp will not work as my 80GB SSD is FULL. And Windows on bootcamp makes this MacBook becoming an egg-cooker by the way. Had tried that one time.
Don’t behave that here and say – or mention – that I’m lying. That’s simply NOT the fact, ok?
Last thing: The 30″ display was shit. It was VERY slow regarding refreshments. The antiglare foil looks very – creepy – and I had good reasons to sell it. I’m not a pro photograph and need it – and if I would ever spend that much money on a single display, believe me – I would go with a decent LaCie, HP or EIZO LED screen.
Cheers.
kayoone
Hey Dennis,
oh noes, you got that wrong! By no means was i trying to imply that you dont work hard for your money. I am very sorry if it sounded like that. I am very happy for you that you can afford that stuff and play around with all that hardware, id love to! So no hard feelings there.
Regarding the other stuff, i just wanted to start a technical discussion because i love that, again, not meant to be rude or anything!
My idea was not to run it in a VM, but native through Bootcamp or on some external Windows box via remote desktop. If you have tried that already okay, than i obviously am wrong about that. Seems to be a very huge Flash application indeed.
I was not implying that you lied, just that you might have not tried everything to make that thing work better, but apparently you did so sorry for that assumption. Just wanted to maybe point to other solutions instead of buying new hardware.
Just wanted to make this clear, all fine. You do what you think is best for you and your business and ill keep my mouth shut
I just like debating about solutions and hardware and stuff, thats all.
dennis
Hey Arne,
ok – no worries. I guess you’ve written it maybe you were pissed about something or so. This happens – also to me sometimes and also in the blog and yes – I admit, also in this particular post
I don’t want you to shut up – if I wanted that – I could have removed your comment, but that’s really not my style.
I even understand it and I felt the same a few years ago seeing other people having hardware I just could dream of and switching them often.
Reading your comment first, I thought “Bloody hell – why should I create so much work for myself if I just get this kind of comment!?” – but on the other hand, I get mostly positive feedback from those nice guys who are reading and steady commenting my written stuff.
Nevermind – forget it, ok?
And don’t stop saying what you think – this is (until now) a country where you can say what you think (haha! yeah, speaking of Germany).
kayoone
Hey Dennis,
yeah you are right, i probably had a bad day aswell and exaggerated a bit. Sorry again.
Its not that i never say positive things about your stuff, i generally love your server projects even if you didnt have some of them very long
I just saw an old pic of your Workstation with the Mac Pro and two Samsung Displays. Wasnt that a good choice ?
BTW i change my mind very often as well. I wanted a MBP for everything for a while, now my plan is a Mac pro + 2x 30″ Dell and a Macbook Air
But for the coming year my Hackintosh with 2x 24″ and then maybe a MBA in some months will have to do
cheers
